This new legislation will ensure that those who pose a risk to the public face stricter bail conditions.
Changes to bail include:
1) Imposing more stringent bail requirements
2) Directing police and courts not to release an accused when doing so would be against the public interest
3) Establishing reverse onus provisions
Sentences will also be tougher and longer for repeat and violent offences, including crimes such as car theft and extortion.
Changes to sentencing include:
1) Directing judges to impose consecutive sentences for repeat violent offences and auto theft, meaning offenders serve each sentence one after another
2) Ending house arrest for sexual assault and child sexual offences
3) Reinstating driving prohibitions for offences involving criminal negligence causing bodily harm or death
