If tariffs are raising your costs, this office can help.
New Canadian counter-tariffs take effect September 8, 2026, in response to the unjustified tariffs imposed by the United States. These cover paper products, furniture, apparel, appliances, tools, electronics and lumber, with higher rates on steel and aluminum. If your business imports materials from the United States, your input costs are going up.
Our office is running a dedicated tariff support service for businesses in Eglinton–Lawrence. We will tell you plainly what you may qualify for, what you probably do not, and where we can actually help move something on your behalf.
Call 1-833-REMIT-70 (1-833-736-4870) or fill out the form below. We aim to respond in one business day.
Tell Us About Your Business
The more detail you can give us now, the faster we can tell you where you stand. Nothing here is binding and you are not applying for anything yet — this just tells us how to help.
Before you apply
What the federal programs actually require
The federal government announced a $7.5 billion support package. Much
of it is built for large manufacturers and exporters. Answer three
questions and we'll tell you plainly which programs fit your business —
including when the answer is none of them.
Where you stand
Open to every business, whatever your size
Surtax remission
If you import a material from the United States that you cannot
reasonably source elsewhere, you may be able to apply for relief from —
or a refund of — the surtax you pay on it. Finance Canada continues to
accept remission requests from businesses unduly affected.
There are no employee, revenue or age thresholds. The barrier is the
paperwork: tariff classification, import volumes and values, unit
pricing, cost and employment effects, and evidence about alternative
suppliers.
This is the part our office can actually do with you — and where several
local businesses import the same materials, we group them into joint
submissions that carry more weight than any one firm alone.
This is a guide based on published program criteria, not a determination.
Final eligibility is decided by the administering agency. If anything here
is unclear, call us and we'll work through it with you.

We can:

Help you prepare to file a surtax remission request
Group your submission with other local businesses importing similar materials
Help you apply for Work-Sharing and the Workforce Retention and Retraining Program
Connect you directly with FedDev Ontario, BDC and EDC
Raise your case directly with the Minister of Finance’s office
We cannot:
Change the tariff schedule or exempt an individual business
Guarantee a remission request will be granted
Provide loans, grants or financing directly
Give you legal, accounting or customs brokerage advice
If you are not in Eglinton–Lawrence, we are not able to open a file for you — a Member of Parliament’s office serves the constituents of that riding. But we will not simply hang up. Call us and we will:
Look up your own Member of Parliament and give you their constituency office number
Send you the same remission request template we use here, at no cost, so you can take it to them
Tell you what we have learned about what Finance is asking for
You are entitled to this help from your own MP. We would rather spend two minutes making sure you get to the right office than have you give up on it.
